What would 2020 be without TikTok, I ask? I think it’s fair to say that this one app alone has done more to eradicate more of the doom and gloom than any amount of Zoom quizzes or banana bread could ever.

Now that we’re getting to the end of the year, however, TikTok has sent round a document outlining some of the achievements that us Brits have made on the app, and one such section is rather vaguely entitled “The Videos”. It has no view count, no description of what went on in the videos – just links, however, we can only assume these are the most viewed of 2020. So, according to TikTok themselves, these are the best and most viewed British TikTok videos of 2020.

10. Ping pong ball trickshot – 2.7 million likes

It is simply not possible to set up an elaborate ping pong ball trick shot on the internet and get any less than one million likes. Although the trick itself doesn’t seem to work out all that well, it’s very satisfying to watch nonetheless, and I think we can all agree it was three hours well spent for these two.

9. Wholesome grandad content – 3.2 million likes

Okay, this was titled wholesome grandad content, but it actually ought to turn your stomach above anything. The whole video is a masterclass in how to reap likes from stupid people – the painful overacting, the young person enjoying time with an OAP, the upbeat pop music.

It sends shivers down my spine.

8. Football freestyle – 3.4 million likes

To say this is underwhelming for the number of likes it has is quite possibly an understatement of criminal magnitude. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but take a look at the comments and tell me that some of them don’t look sus, as if they’re fake accounts paid to up the engagement of the post.

I’ll just leave it here before feelings get hurt.

The pool guy is well known on the app for… cleaning pools. Seriously, he’s built a following of nearly three million fans for cleaning swimming pools, but he fully deserves it. After all, what ought to be a mundane activity is made to look so satisfying, and there’s simply something about watching it go from green pond to blue pool that makes everyone a little excited.

I’m just waiting for “gutter cleaning bloke” to come along and steal the game in 2021.

We’re nearly there. At number two of the most viewed British TikTok videos we have Ehiz, a creator whose whole shtick seems to be based upon doing silly “ha ha” faces for people that hand out their laughs too easily. In this, he does a “ha ha” when he tries to do the timewarp scan smoking effect with a lollipop. Ha ha.
