Watch the emotional moment Phillip Schofield came out on This Morning

‘I will sit here and say actually, I am proud of myself today’

Daytime TV legend Phillip Schofield came out as gay this morning in a brave Instagram post, writing “with the strength and support of my wife and daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.”

The 57-year-old This Morning host went through the decision in an emotional sofa chat with co-star Holly Willoughby, where he explained that “there’s no question that it has, in recent times, consumed my head”.

Schofield said my “overriding emotion with my family is guilt”, but was inspired to open up after sitting opposite countless people on the This Morning sofa.

“I was getting to the point where I didn’t like myself very much because I wasn’t honest with myself”, said Schofield.

“It was something I knew I had to do,” he said, adding that “‘I will sit here and say actually, I am proud of myself today”.

He told Holly: “You know this has been bothering me for a long time, and everybody does these things at their own speed, when they feel the time is right.”

Schofield has been married to wife Steph for 27 years and has two grown-up daughters, including Leeds Beckett grad Ruby. “My family have held me so close,” he wrote on Instagram, asking people to “please be kind, especially to my family”.
