What is ‘I Love You Now Die’ about?

I Love You, Now Die is based on the case of Michelle Carter. Michelle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after texting her boyfriend Conrad persuading him to take his own life in 2014.

In July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy died by suicide in his car. Police then found messages on his phone from his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter, that seemed to encourage him to take his life. The story went viral and the trial raised the question of whether someone can be held accountable for the suicide of another person.

In her court case, Michelle was painted as a reckless murderer playing “a sick game of life and death.” She was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in 2017 and given two and half years in jail. She appealed her conviction and her sentence was paused.

The documentary I Love You, Now Die includes footage from Michelle Carter’s trial and features interviews with key people involved. These include her boyfriend’s family, her defence lawyer, witnesses who appeared in court, detectives and journalists who covered the case.
