Timeline of real-life Lizzie Borden photos shows what she looked like over the years

After Monster: The Lizzie Borden, everyone’s wondering what Lizzie Borden actually looked like in real life, so here are some pictures of her throughout her life. 

Ryan Murphy’s latest true crime series tells the story of Borden, from Fall River, Massachusetts, who was accused and acquitted of killing her father, Andrew, and stepmother, Abby, in August 1892.

Ella Beatty plays the role of Lizzie in the eight-part series, but she actually looks quite different to the real woman. This timeline of photos shows what she looked like from childhood right up to her death. 

1877

This photo was taken in 1877, when Lizzie was 17 years old as a schoolgirl in Fall River, Massachusetts. She attended the Morgan Street School right from primary age all the way up to secondary school.

1889

By 1889, Borden was 29 years old, and this photo was taken just three years before the murders. At this point, she still lived with her parents and was a big churchwoman, teaching Sunday school and doing lots of community work at the Central Congressional Church in Fall River.

1890

Around this time, Borden was also an active member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) around this time, a Christian social reform movement that advocated for the prohibition of alcohol. Plus, she was on the Fall River Hospital board, volunteered with the Good Samaritan Charity Hospital, and was a member of the Ladies’ Fruit and Flower Mission.

1893

This picture is believed to have been taken in 1893, the same year as the trial, which took place in New Bedford. It started on 5th June, then the jury was sent to deliberate on 20th June and reached its not-guilty verdict after just 40 minutes. Borden was then formally acquitted on the same day.

1920

Believed to have been taken between 1915 and 1925, more than two decades after the trial, this photo shows Lizzie in her later life relaxing on the porch at her Maplecroft estate. She was a big animal lover and had multiple Boston Terriers as pets, and she’s relaxing with one of them on her knee.
