The real life crime scene pictures from the Borden house that were used in Lizzie Borden trial

Pictures from the crime scene at the house Lizzie Borden lived at with her father and step mother are quite publicly available. Lizzie Borden was accused of two grisly murders in August 1892. She was accused of killing her step mother Abby, and her father, Andrew, in their home. 

She was later acquitted, and nobody else went to trial for the killings, so they remain an unsolved mystery. By today’s standards, the police who worked on the Borden murders have been described as “sloppy” and “disorganised”. 

The Borden home is located on 230 Second Street in the city of Fall River, Massachusetts. It’s a three-story house, and currently operates as the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast and Museum.

According to the Lizzie Borden website, the photographs were taken of the scene of the crime, but they were actually taken after 3:30pm on August 4th 1892, many hours after the murders. The website has explained that the bodies of Andrew and Abby Borden were examined by five different doctors that day, and these images represent the best estimate as to the positioning of the bodies following the crimes.

On the morning of August 4th 1892, Abby Borden was found dead in one of the bedrooms on the home’s second floor. Despite what the now well-known nursery rhyme might suggest, Lizzie’s stepmother Abby was struck around 18 times. According to the source website, some of the pictures have been cropped and enhanced to make them slightly better quality.

Andrew Borden was killed more than an hour later, when he returned home from running errands. Police found him on the living room sofa, nearly unrecognisable from his injuries, having been struck 11 times by a hatchet.
