Here’s what the real Lizzie Borden’s father Andrew was actually like to be around

In the new Netflix show Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Lizzie’s father Andrew does not come off well. Charlie Hunnam portrays the character as being detached, cold, prone to angry outbursts, and downright creepy. But what was the real Andrew Borden actually like to be around? Here’s what newspapers from the 1890s said about his personality.

So, Lizzie Borden‘s older sister Emma was actually interviewed in 1913 by the Boston Post. She described her father’s personality. She said: “Some unkind persons have spread the report that my father, despite his great wealth, was niggardly and that he refused to even give us sufficient to eat. That is a wicked lie. He was a plain-mannered man, but his table was always laden with the best that the market could afford.”

On the day that Andrew died, a news story in the Fall River Daily Globe described him as a “dignified, reserved man, courteous in manner and strictly honourable in all his doings”. An article published the next day suggested Andrew was quite introverted. The paper said: “Although he had considerable leisure time, [he] was rarely to be found where men are accustomed to congregate.”

In a Boston Globe article, Andrew was characterised as being very frugal with his own clothes. Apparently, he “dressed very plainly, almost to the point of shabbiness” and “retained a tie until it was almost thread-bare”.

During Emma’s testimony at Lizzie’s trial, she mentioned that he only ever wore one piece of jewellery – a ring which Lizzie had gaven him approximately 10 or 15 years ago.
