Singer crashes out after revealing meaning of his TikTok-famous song Daylight, and it’s so odd

He’s posted nearly 10 videos in response to a conversation that doesn’t exist

David Kushner, the singer and songwriter for the viral TikTok sound Daylight, is crashing out on TikTok, posting the same thing over and over again after literally nothing happened.

Though TikTok has its dark corners, there’s no denying that it has helped launch the careers of so many would-be musicians. Names like Lil Nas X, PinkPantheress, and Olivia Rodrigo immediately jump to mind. Though I wouldn’t say that David Kushner is as famous as some of those names, his 2024 track Daylight is still a regularly used sound today.

It went viral two years ago, but for some reason, David has been posting incessantly about the meaning behind the track.

What are the lyrics to Daylight?

For the longest time, people noted the similarities between Daylight and the average queer experience. Read the lyrics, and you’ll understand why:

Telling myself I won’t go there
Oh, but I know that I won’t care
Tryna wash away all the blood I’ve spilt
This lust is a burden that we both share
Two sinners can’t atone from a lone prayer
Souls tied, intertwined by our pride and guilt

There’s darkness in the distance
From the way that I’ve been livin’
But I know I can’t resist it

Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
You and I drink the poison from the same vine
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
Hidin’ all of our sins from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time

Tellin’ myself it’s the last time
Can you spare any mercy that you might find
If I’m down on my knees again?
Deep down, way down, Lord, I try
Try to follow your light, but it’s night time
Please, don’t leave me in the end

There’s darkness in the distance
I’m beggin’ for forgiveness (ooh)
But I know I might resist it, oh

Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
You and I drink the poison from the same vine
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
Hidin’ all of our sins from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time

Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
You and I drink the poison from the same vine
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
Hidin’ all of our sins from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin’ from the daylight
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time

Naturally, many queer people have found the track relatable, and it’s often used in gay TikTok edits about characters being shipped together. But it’s important to note that people understood the religious connotations. I mean, lord with a capital M makes it very clear, as do words like sins and forgiveness.

So what’s Daylight actually about?

At first, the posts were incredibly normal. He shared an interesting tidbit about Daylight that people might not have clocked, but then things grew progressively stranger.

You see, over the course of five days, David has posted nearly 10 videos about Daylight and its true meaning. Those videos went on both TikTok and Instagram, and he even took to his stories with further comments.

Most of the posts follow the same structure. It’s Daylight playing as some variation of the following words are on the screen: “POV: You’re an atheist, and you’ve just found out what you’ve been singing for three years.”

In a slightly lengthier video, David welcomed the love and support whilst stating he “didn’t mean to trigger” people. But that’s just it: No one is triggered, and no one was talking about the meaning of Daylight before he brought it up.

@davidkushner

you don’t have to believe in a song to love it 😭

In another, he said “me accidentally starting a religious war”, but is the war in the room with us? The vast majority of people already knew it was about religion, only that the themes of the song could also be applied to other experiences.

As for why he’s chosen 2026 to randomly bring this up, your guess is as good as mine.

What are people saying about it?

@davidkushner

can I get a ‘checkmate atheists’ in the chat?

As you can imagine, the prevailing feeling on the internet right now is sheer confusion. No one has an issue with the song’s religious meaning, but David’s numerous posts have left them feeling icky.

“David Kushner crashing out on ig stories bc ppl found it a lil weird he kept posting the same ~joke abt ‘checkmating’ atheists who like his song daylight. Like. Bro, it’s very overtly a song abt faith, we already knew this. We were never being fooled into listening to it lol,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “I truly think he just needs the engagement for his new upcoming album bc he fell off after his first album.”

“What’s with your obsession with atheists bro,” someone else said.

Oh, and just in case you weren’t aware: Daylight by David Kushner is about God.
