Just three months before her death, Hayden spoke candidly about her relationship with her mother, Lesley Vogel, while promoting her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning.
During an emotional appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast in May, Hayden reflected on her relationship with her mum, who had worked as her manager during her childhood career.
According to Hayden, she came to feel that their relationship had become heavily intertwined with business. She said “everything” between them “was business”, and described feeling as though she had taken on a series of roles within her family rather than simply being her mother’s daughter.
“I became the confidant and the assistant and the therapist and the shoulder to cry on and everything but her child,” Hayden claimed during the interview.
Hayden also recalled a conversation she had with her mum after deciding she no longer wanted the pair to work together.
Having become a successful child actor, Hayden said money she earned through her career had gone towards household expenses, including car payments and phone bills. She recalled feeling “incredibly uncomfortable” with the situation.
Hayden said she eventually told her mum she wanted to separate their professional relationship from their personal one.

“I said to her, ‘I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom,’” Hayden said.
She recalled feeling hopeful about what the change could mean for their relationship, but said she was taken aback by her mother’s response.
“I remember being hopeful. But I also wasn’t expecting the reaction that I got, which was, ‘You owe me.’ And that’s all she said. And she walked out.”
Hayden said the exchange left her feeling deeply hurt.
“It was disappointing to find out that it was money. The fact that she didn’t care to have a relationship with me was a tough pill to swallow,” she said.
She added that she “desperately wanted to still feel like I had parents to lean on”.
Hayden and Lesley’s relationship had previously been publicly discussed during the promotion of her memoir, with Hayden confirming that they were estranged.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Hayden said: “We don’t have a relationship right now.”
She described the situation as “unfortunate”, but made clear that she had not completely ruled out reconciliation.
“That doesn’t mean that I don’t leave the door open for the opportunity to present itself one day,” she said.
Lesley, who was also an actress, had previously managed Hayden’s career and helped guide her into the entertainment industry from a young age.
However, Lesley disputed aspects of Hayden’s account and publicly responded to the claims surrounding their relationship.
In a statement to Page Six in May, Lesley described Hayden as “entitled” and said she believed “the present drama is partially to sell books.”
“There is a personality ‘style’ which manifests as a need for control, entitlement, and a lack of empathy,” she said. “The major fear is that someone will see through the mask they present to the world and discover who they truthfully are.”
Lesley also said: “This condition cannot be ‘fixed’” and claimed that “this personality style does not accept responsibility for life choices and therefore feels they have no need to alter their behavior.”
Hayden subsequently rejected her mother’s characterisation of her, describing Lesley’s claims as “so false” in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
