Police issue response to Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death, age 36, as investigation is launched

Ahead of an official report from the coroner, the police have shared some insight into Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death.

The former Scream star, who was just 36, suddenly passed away on Sunday, her rep confirmed. Her dad then shared the “profound sadness” he’s experienced amidst the news.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” he said, asking for privacy amidst the “unimaginable loss.”

Few other details were revealed about her passing, but now, alongside rampant speculation online, the police have shared some new details.

Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death is not believed to be ‘suspicious’

Speaking to the MailOnline on Monday, police in South Carolina detailed how they were called to a property in Greenville on Sunday afternoon. The 911 call was made by an “acquaintance”, but no other details about their identity were provided.

The unnamed person said the actress was “unresponsive” on the phone, and while paramedics did attempt to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner has yet to file an official report, but an investigation is underway to determine Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death. Still, the “preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.”

The full statement from the police reads: “On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1.51pm, officers from the Greenville Police Department, accompanied by EMS personnel, responded to a report of an unresponsive female at Judson Mill Lofts, located at 701 Easley Bridge Road.

‘Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The case is under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

“The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An acquaintance of Ms Panettiere placed the 911 call. At this time, no further details are available for release.”

More information is expected to be released as the full investigation continues.
