Security expert claims two key ‘mistakes’ were made before Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting

He described them as ‘concerning’

A security expert has revealed two “mistakes” he claims were made at the Utah Valley University event where Charlie Kirk was tragically shot dead.

The 31-year-old conservative commentator was fatally shot in the neck on the first stop of his American Comeback Tour, where he was debating with students for his organisation Turning Point USA.

He had his own team at the outdoor event, and there were also police present. However, security expert Will Geddes told LADbible the security at the event was “not sufficient” and claimed they made two key “mistakes”.

Charlie Kirk was underneath a ‘fabric cabana’ when he was shot

The first “mistake” the security expert said “concerned him” was that Charlie Kirk was underneath a “fabric cabana,” which meant the bullet had no obstruction. He claimed it’s vital to “risk assess for everything” and “see who could get a direct line of sight to you, and then close off those problems”.

“What I would be doing is putting myself exactly in the place, this is in advance of the event, I’d be putting myself in the place of where the principal will be standing or sitting. So I can then aspect in front of me and to my sides and to my rear, where a threat potentially has a direct line of sight to me,” he said.

“So if there’s a threat of a potential shooting how easy would that be able to be done? Would it be from someone in the immediate front row, or the mid rows, or the rear rows? Or would it be someone who’s aspected from a roof?”

The conservative activist was also sitting down at the outdoor event

Geddes added that Kirk was sitting down when he was fatally shot, which “made him the proverbial sitting duck”. Sitting down meant he was still the entire time, making him an easier target.

He also compared the Charlie Kirk incident to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Pennsylvania in July 2024, where the bullet wounded the now-President’s upper right ear and said more should have been done to “restrict access to the roofs”.

The roof offered a direct line of sight to Kirk’s seated location, so he claimed the roofs should have been closed off and security should have been stationed up there to stop someone from getting a clear line to the target.
