This amazing new AirPods feature will be an absolute lifesaver when travelling abroad

It’s so clever

At the 2025 Apple Event this week, the tech giant announced a brand new AirPods feature called Live Translation that is going to make your holidays so much easier.

Alongside the new iPhone Air, they unveiled the AirPods Pro 3, which have “incredible sound quality,” “the world’s best in-ear active noise cancellation,” and “exceptional in-ear fit” – but that’s not all.

The AirPods have a really clever feature called Live Translation, which will be available with older models too, and it’s a game-changer for travelling abroad.

So, what is the new AirPods Live Translation feature?

With Live Translation, your AirPods listen to someone speaking to you in another language and translate it into your own language. Then, they play the translation to you in your ears.

You can speak back, and if two people are both using AirPods, you can both talk to each other and have the whole conversation translated. So, no more awkward situations where you can’t understand someone!

If the other person doesn’t have AirPods with this capability, you can use your iPhone to display the transcript and show the other person what you are saying.

Plus, your AirPods will automatically lower the volume of the other person speaking so it’s easier to focus on the translation while still staying connected in the conversation.

Apple says it “makes face-to-face conversations easier by helping users connect even if they don’t speak the same language” using their new AI system, Apple Intelligence.

You don’t need the AirPods Pro 3 to use Live Translation

The best part is, you don’t actually have to upgrade to the new AirPods Pro 3 to use Live Translation. It’s available on two other AirPods models as well, the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 too.

“Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 and later,” Apple says.

However, you do also need the iPhone 15 Pro or newer to do it, as older iPhones don’t have Apple Intelligence. To use Live Translation, all you have to do is press on the stems of both AirPods at the same time.

It’s only available in five languages right now

At the moment, Live Translation is only available in five languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. However, four more languages by the end of the year: Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
