It’s feeling scarily likely, but people in these five jobs won’t be conscripted if WW3 breaks out
How quickly can you completely change careers?
This week, hospitals in Europe have been told to prepare for a war to break out ahead of March 2026. Welp. That’s very specific, and very soon. So yet again, there’s conversation of what we would all have to do if WW3 did suddenly happen. But, there are five key jobs that if you hold, you won’t be conscripted to go and fight in a war.
It was revealed this week the French health ministry sent a letter to all hospitals in the country, telling them to start getting ready for a “major commitment”. This was by the very specific deadline of March 2026. “Hospitals must be ready to welcome thousands of wounded soldiers in the event of a generalised armed conflict in Europe,” it said. Of course, this has caused a lot of panic.
But, certain jobs are deemed too crucial at home in the UK. That means, if a war was to break out, those who have those jobs would avoid being conscripted.

So, what jobs do you need to have to avoid being sent off to war?
In the past, the five key jobs that have been exempt from war have been: Bakers, farmers, doctors, nurses and engineers. These roles were seen as too important at home to be left without them during war efforts. Granted, the urgent need for bakers might have changed since the days of WW2, so maybe less luck if that’s what your job is now.
Other groups of people are also exempt from being called up to war. As well as essential workers, those are: Anyone under the age of 18, students, and anyone with a medical exemption.

If you don’t fall into one of these categories, but still don’t want to go, you are classed as a conscientious objector. In the past, these objectors were forced to stand before a tribunal to detail their moral, religious, or philosophical reasons for not fighting in the war.
