If WW3 actually happens, these four countries would be the safest in a nuclear war
Maybe it’s time to relocate
As tensions continue in Iran, people are still fearing that a WW3 could break out, and some countries would be much safer than others if nuclear weapons start being used.
Nuclear weapons are the most dangerous on Earth, and one explosion over any major city could kill millions of people in one go, which is a very scary thought.
After Trump’s airstrike on Iran, Keir Starmer warned Brits about a possible “escalation” and claimed nuclear weapons are a real threat.
“That’s a risk to the region. It’s a risk beyond the region, and that’s why all our focus has been on de-escalating, getting people back around to negotiate what is a very real threat in relation to the nuclear programme,” he said, as revealed by the BBC.
So, what are the safest countries to live in if a nuclear war breaks out? Here are the top four.
These would be the safest countries in a nuclear war
Most experts agree that the two safest countries in a nuclear war would be Australia and New Zealand.
Speaking on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast last year, journalist Annie Jacobsen, who has written a lot of books about nuclear war, explained that these countries would avoid something called “nuclear winter”.
When fires caused by nuclear bombs send smoke into the atmosphere, this blocks sunlight and cools the Earth’s surface, which would cause crops to fail and animals to die across the northern hemisphere, meaning there would be no food.
Australia and New Zealand are far away from the major cities that would be targeted by nuclear attacks, meaning they would likely avoid this nuclear winter and still be able to grow crops, making them the safest.

“Most of the world, certainly the mid-latitudes, would be covered in sheets of ice…places like Iowa and Ukraine would be just snow for 10 years. Agriculture would fail, and when agriculture fails, people just die,” she said.
“On top of that, you have the radiation poisoning because the ozone layer will be so damaged and destroyed that you couldn’t be outside in the sunlight – people will be forced to live underground fighting for food everywhere except in New Zealand and Australia.”

Iceland and Argentina would also be safe options
After Australia and New Zealand, Iceland and Argentina are generally considered the next two safest countries in a nuclear attack because they are big crop producers, are fairly isolated, and are unlikely to be directly struck.
A 2022 study in Nature Food found that Argentina would be able to sustain life because it “already grows more resistant crops, such as wheat, in large quantities and also had low populations”.
The Smart Survivalist also named Iceland the safest “because Iceland is isolated from the rest of the world by the North Atlantic Ocean,” so it would be “very difficult for a nuclear missile to reach Iceland without being detected first”.
