Hallam SU volunteering opportunities supported by over 1,600 students in 2024/25 year
Volunteers dedicated an impressive number of hours
A total of 1,635 students participated in volunteering opportunities organised by Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union over the last year.
The volunteers dedicated an estimated 79,000 hours to a variety of causes and initiatives in Sheffield and across the country in this time.
This included work with Sheffield Hospitals Charity, The Archer Project, Leeds Fest, and Meadowhall Motorfest.
The new President of Hallam SU, Molly Pemberton, said: “It is always inspiring to see so many of our students taking the opportunity to volunteer and get involved with our local communities and beyond.
“Volunteering is a great way for students to not only learn real world skills and gain industry experience but also grow confidence, build new connections and make a real difference to the Sheffield community!”
One of last year’s volunteers, occupational therapy student Lilia Choi, volunteered with the city’s Age UK Dementia Wellbeing Centre.
She said: “I enjoy seeing how small moments, like a favourite song or a fun activity, can brighten the day of the people living with mild to moderate dementia.
“Volunteering is also an excellent way to learn more about our community in Sheffield and do something meaningful at the same time.”
MSc physiotherapy student Dona Cherian said despite the demand of her course she “made it a priority to give back to the community” – participating in organised volunteering such as a litter pick on Cleethorpes Beach.
Dona added: “I’ve met some great people, and it’s been a fantastic way to feel more connected to the local area.
