Get your BBC iPlayer logins ready because four Lancaster students are set to take on Lincoln in University Challenge.
This September the Lancs team, led by mathematics graduate Lex Wiggins, will be facing the University of Lincoln in the first round of this year’s competition.
The episode was pre-recorded at the BBC’s Salford studios earlier this summer as part of the new series.
Lex told the university: “At the start of the last academic year I’d only dreamed of being on the show and, when I signed up for the intercollege quiz trials, I thought the University Challenge bit was a fun bonus […] It still doesn’t feel real!”
The rest of the team is made up of history student Talhah Hussain, philosophy, politics and economics student Josie Hyland, physics student Eoin Neale, and medicine student Fatima Al Sharef holding the reserve spot.
The group are all part of Lancaster University’s QuizSoc, with team captain Lex adding: ““I also have to say that we couldn’t have done it without QuizSoc, which was only formed in late 2023 and has made our quizzing culture at Lancaster bigger than ever, and Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU), who put a really thorough selection process in place and went the extra mile this year.”
The team frequently do pub quizzes and national QuizBowl events alongside QuizSoc.
Clare Parody, the series producer of University Challenge, told Lancaster University: “We hope very much that the team will enjoy the broadcast of their first-round match. We greatly enjoyed working with them and think they should be extremely proud of their achievements in the competition.”
