One of Lancaster students’ most treasured campus bars is set to semi-reopen

Get your cocktail glasses ready and your pool cues chalked up, because she’s back in business

Following the loss of many campus pubs this year, one of Lancaster students’ most treasured bars is set to semi-reopen.

In June 2025 it was announced that Grizedale Bar would be closed with immediate effect, this came following the closure of multiple other bars, including the founding colleges Bowland Bar and Lonsdale Bar, which were closed earlier this year due to financial reasons.

However, it was recently announced on Instagram that the university has agreed to a compromise with the Grizedale JCR Exec, meaning the bar can be opened during special events.

Grizedale Bar has consistently been a campus favourite for enjoyers of cocktails as well as avid pool players making use of their tables.

It has not yet been made clear which special events this entails, and which dates and times the bar will be open, but an opening has been confirmed for the college’s 50th anniversary celebrations this year.

In the post, Grizedale JCR said: “We’re pleased to share that the university has agreed to work with us on a compromise to ensure Grizedale Bar remains open for our community to enjoy during special events. However, we have not yet been given full details, such as the specific days and times the bar will operate. As soon as we receive this information, we will make sure to update the Grizedale community.

“We’re also delighted to confirm that Grizedale Bar will be fully open during our 50th Anniversary celebrations, so both students and alumni can enjoy the best possible weekend. Beyond the agreed opening times, we’ll continue to make use of the space for events and activities, and we’ll work closely with you to shape these opportunities so everyone in Grizedale College can make the most of their experience.

“We’re looking forward to a fantastic Welcome Week – we have so much planned for you!”

Grizedale Bar will be amongst only four out of nine bars to remain open this upcoming academic year, joining Furness Bar, Fylde Bar, and County Bar.
