
At least 19 dead and dozens injured as military plane crashes into college campus
Most of the casualties are believed to be students
At least 19 people are believed to be dead after a military plane crashed into a college campus in Bangladesh. An Air Force F-7 BGI training aircraft is said to have crashed into the canteen of the college, leaving dozens injured.
The plane hit the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara, in the northern area of the capital Dhaka. It had taken off at 1.06pm local time, and crashed around 12 minutes later. The military has confirmed that one of its aircraft was involved.
A spokesman for the college is reported to have said: “The plane fell on the gate and crashed nearby while a class was in session.” Students are believed to have been taking tests and attending regular lessons when the incident happened. A teacher at the college, Rezaul Islam, told BBC Bangla that he saw the plane “directly” hit the building.
According to reports, more than 150 have been injured. Those injured have been taken to a military hospital in the area, it’s been said. It has been reported the majority of the injuries have been sustained by students at the college, and are burn-related.

A number of pictures and videos have been shared on Twitter. They show smoke engulfing the area, and people running away from the scene.
Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, said “necessary measures” would be taken to investigate the cause of the accident and “ensure all kinds of assistance”.
He said: “The loss suffered by the Air Force… students, parents, teachers and staff, and others in this accident is irreparable.” A national day of mourning has been declared for Tuesday.
