The brutal way the Squid Game creator avoided breaking South Korean rule in season three

Kinda genius, kinda evil

Squid Game season three was beyond brutal with the deaths of an old lady, a trans woman, and a formerly pregnant mother who was killed off right after bringing her baby girl into the world.

We’ve come to expect a level of savagery from director Hwang Dong-hyuk. From the brutal killing of Jeong-bae to people being gunned down on mass during Red Light, Green Light, it’s part of the reason we all love the Netflix show so much. Despite that, season three really upped the ante and left most of us reeling from traumatic death after traumatic death. Even the character we thought was safe, Kim Jun-hee, sadly met her end.

The reason a pregnant Jun-hee was always pegged to survive

When season two of Squid Game came out last year, people pegged Kim Jun-hee as the only survivor due to the fact that she was pregnant. You see, there’s an unwritten rule in South Korea that prevents a TV show from killing off pregnant people. Though not a firm rule, in fact, there are countless instances of pregnant people being killed in South Korean TV shows; people from the area say it’s a thin line that could result in a show being banned.

In Squid Game season three, a heavily pregnant Jun-hee is still trying to survive the games with help from Cho Hyun-ju, Jang Geum-ja, and Seong Gi-hun. She eventually gives birth mid-game, forcing Hyun-ju and Geum-ja to sequester her into a private room. The father of her baby, Myung-gi, is off killing people at this point.

Soon enough, Jun-hee is alone with her baby after he allies are killed – though not before Geum-ja forces Gi-hun to protect the mother and baby in the games to come. During the jump rope game in episode three, director Hwang Dong-hyuk made the decision to have Jun-hee take her own life by jumping off the platform.

Basically: We can’t brutally kill a pregnant woman so she will deliver her baby and die in the next episode.

Though Jun-hee’s death served to push Gi-hun over the edge and us viewers closer to the TV, people were nonetheless shocked that they actually pulled it off.

One person wrote: “It hurts even more, cause she was the last person from the group that truly wanted out and had to watch all of them go, whether by them revealing themselves as monsters or sacrificial lambs.”

“The directors were probably all smiling and laughing when they came up with the idea, like ‘How did I never think of that, you’re so smart for that, let’s do it,” another wrote.

It all worked out in the end, though, because now the little tot is a billionaire with detective Hwang Jun-ho as a stepdad.
