University of London suspends vice-chancellor amid accusations of bullying and poor leadership

The University of London has suspended its vice-chancellor amid accusations of bullying and poor leadership.
Professor Wendy Thomson’s suspension took place following a board unanimous decision led by Deputy Chair Kavita Reddi.
A letter seen by The Times revealed that Professor Thomson did not comment on the bullying accusations but rather stated that she had submitted her own complaints regarding “governance and staff issues”.
In another letter sent to the board by employees, Professor Thomson was accused of supposedly creating an environment that fostered a “culture of bullying and fear”, with repeated displays of “aggressive and belittling behaviour” also being reported.
University of London employees further claimed that this conduct severely hindered the growth of the university, suggesting that there was “a serious lack of strategic direction”.
“We believe disclosing concerns about bullying and poor leadership by the vice-chancellor…is of the utmost public interest,” the letter reportedly said.
The alleged behaviour by Professor Thomson was said to have taken place during various significant shifts at the university with reported changes occurring on the board of trustees. Last week, Sir Mark Lowcock resigned as chair whilst Andrew Ratcliffe, another board member, has also reportedly stepped down.
A spokesperson for The University of London told The Standard: “The University of London can confirm that the university’s Board of Trustees has taken the unanimous decision to suspend the vice-chancellor, Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, pending the outcome of an independent investigation into allegations that have been raised against her.
“From Tuesday 27th May, the deputy vice-chancellor, Professor David Latchman, has assumed the vice-chancellor’s responsibilities while the investigation takes place.
