Actor who plays Austin in Ginny and Georgia addresses awkward fact he’s so much older now

‘We ignore it…I’ve kind of departed from Austin’

During season three of Ginny and Georgia on Netflix, nobody can get over that Austin is just… not a child anymore. There have even been calls to recast him, because he can no longer pass as being nine years old.

Ginny’s younger brother Austin is played by Diesel La Torraca, who is 14 in real life. His character is meant to be nine. The latest season of the show has been two and a half years in the making, which has meant Diesel La Torraca has noticeably outgrown his child counterpart.

Since the latest episodes dropped, loads of people have noticed how much Austin has changed. “So Netflix really slapped glasses on this grown man and said ‘he’s nine’,” one person joked. Another person called the show “deeply unserious” and said it will probably have to “recast” Austin soon. Another said Austin “aged in a weekend”.

Now, Diesel La Torraca has actually addressed his growth spurt. “I’ve definitely gotten much taller, and I look much older in the face,” he told Teen Vogue.

“Honestly, we kind of ignore it a little bit! It’s kind of just like… there’s a 14-year-old sitting at the table with Harry Potter glasses on that’s supposed to be nine. And that’s okay! In some shots I did have to bend my knees a little bit to look a little shorter than Toni [Antonia Gentry, who plays Ginny], or they got her an apple box a few times, but for the most part we’ve kind of just kept the show running.”

He also spoke out about the difficulty of trying to continue playing a child, when he’s a teenager now. “I’ve grown with him, but I’ve also kind of departed from him because I was eight when we started, now I’m 14,” he said. “There are a lot of differences in the way that he would move and act and speak. I have to heighten my voice register, slouch a little bit [to] feel like I’m actually a shy, insecure nine-year-old.”
