Erm, is Millie Bobby Brown homophobic? Explaining the viral meme and how it all started
Videos of Millie ‘prepping’ for Pride month are all over TikTok
It’s officially Pride month, which means TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram are once again flooded with memes and videos about Millie Bobby Brown being homophobic. This trend has been going on since 2018, and yet, year on year it seems to pick up increased traffic and interest. Admittedly, people seem to be getting more creative, too, creating videos of Millie “prepping” for Pride month parades by driving over people on Grand Theft Auto.
But let’s break through the noise and nail down exactly what Millie Bobby Brown has said, and why the internet is convinced she is homophobic.

According to Vox, the Millie Bobby Brown homophobic meme can be traced back to a trolling Twitter account that has since been suspended. Back in 2018, when Millie was just 14 years old, said account published a fabricated story about her stamping on a muslim woman’s hijab at the airport. Soon enough, others hopped on the trend with a queer twist and the anti-LGBTQ+ meme was born.
Almost overnight, #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown was trending on Twitter as people posted dozens of fake stories about Millie Bobby Brown. Some claimed she had thrown hot drinks over them for wearing Pride t-shirts, while others said she shouted “f*g” out of the window at them. One of the more popular stories, which has since sparked dozens of AI videos, saw a 14-year-old Millie running gay people over with her car. Another, which showed Millie talking about flat earthers, was cleverly edited to make “facts” sound like “f*gs”.
She deleted her Twitter after a viral hashtag took off

Amid the continued stories and trolling on both Twitter and Instagram, which also included Millie calling her Stranger Things co-star Noah Schnapp “LGBBQ” because she wanted to set him on fire, she deleted her Twitter account and turned off the comments on Insta.
Noah responded to the trolls himself, telling Variety: “I feel really bad for her. I think it was a smart move by her. People are just insensitive.”
Still, years after the trolling first started, it is more prolific than ever. To someone unaware of the context, particularly younger LGBTQ+ youth on TikTok, the memes do look incredibly credible. Take a look.

So the short answer is no, Millie Bobby Brown is NOT homophobic. The long answer is that the internet is a foul place where nothing is really what it seems.
