This new ‘utterly addictive cult drama’ on Netflix is being called the next White Lotus

It came out today!

Netflix has just released new drama Sirens, and it has all the ingredients of being everyone’s next obsession. The cast is great, it focuses around rich people doing rich things, and it’s being compared to The White Lotus. Perfect.

Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Kevin Bacon all star in the five-part miniseries. It’s been backed with some pretty solid five star reviews from critics.

So, here’s what you need to know before you inevitably watch it all in one sitting.

Sirens on Netflix is all about a shady billionaire in a ‘creepy relationship’ with one of her employees

Sirens is set on a luxury beach estate, and follows a woman who is trying to save her sister from her billionaire boss. Julianne Moore plays shady billionaire Michaela Kell. Milly Alcock is Michaela’s employee and protégée Simone, and Meghann Fahy is Simone’s sister Devon. In the show, Devon heads to Michaela’s lavish beach estate to retrieve her sister.

The Netflix synopsis reads: “Devon thinks her sister Simone has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell. Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention, but she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be.

“Told over the course of one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish island estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.”

It’s been called ‘utterly addictive’ and has been compared to The White Lotus

The show has had incredible reviews so far. The Guardian gave it five stars – which is quite rare – and called it an “utterly addictive cult drama” and “preposterously fun”. The review said Sirens is like The White Lotus, if you add a splash of Ryan Murphy camp – which honestly, is all I need to hear.

Variety added the show has a “captivating pull that lures you in and keeps you there for its fast-moving five episodes.” It added it is “hypnotic”, “funny” and “surreal”.

Whilst the majority of the reviews are great, some are a bit more on the fence. Collider also said the show was good, but a major fault was that there wasn’t enough of it. Which I guess is still a positive? “Ultimately, there’s a lot of potential in Sirens,” the review said.

“There are comedic moments that made me laugh out loud, scenes that really made me think and question a woman’s place in society, and instances when you can see just how intricate Metzler’s work on this story is. However, given its small episode count, the series never gets to spread its wings wide enough to soar to greater heights.”
