Join The Sheffield Tab: 2025/26 editorial team applications are now open

Applications close on Friday 2nd May at 3pm

| UPDATED

Applications to join The Sheffield Tab’s editorial team for 2025/26 are now open!

The positions available are News Editor and Features Editor, and all students from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are eligible to apply.

Successful applicants will be part of a core team producing a variety of high quality, engaging, and relevant content for students across both of Sheffield’s universities.

You’ll receive training from the team at The Tab HQ, and also gain a wide range of fantastic journalistic experience. Previous editors and contributors at The Tab have gone on to work for BBC News, The Telegraph, Vogue, and more.

What else is in it for you? As an editor, you’ll have the opportunity to write for the national Tab website (which over nine million monthly views) and network with other student Tab editors from across the country at our biannual London get togethers.

Interested? The deadline for applications is Friday 2nd May at 3pm.

Not fancying either of these roles? We are always looking for writers and social media contributors as well, so also send us a message if you’d like to get involved in another way.

News Editor

This is one of the best roles in Sheffield student media for anyone wanting to gain a wide range of experience in news journalism. Each week is different and will require you to work on a variety of stories, as is the nature of news reporting.

You will be writing, editing, and commissioning news stories throughout each week based on current or upcoming events relevant to students in Sheffield. This includes strike action, protests, controversy, police incidents, issues facing students, or cultural events around the city.

You will also do some investigative and data journalism – being in the know and working on exclusive scoops.

We strive to be the first ones on a story, so having your finger on the pulse of the latest news, being organised, and being able to delegate are all key skills for this role.

Other responsibilities include supporting writers, giving feedback, and collaborating with the rest of the editorial team (we have a weekly catch up meeting!)

There will also be opportunities to work on social media and features content, as well as our coverage of events.

You’ll be working on stories like these:

Sheffield student flats under police cordon amid ‘armed standoff’

University of Sheffield vice-chancellor claims £17,000 in business class travel expenses

Sheffield Hallam staff begin UCU strike action

Sheffield Tramlines Festival announces star-studded lineup for 2025

Features Editor

As Features Editor, you will take on the exciting leading role of writing, editing, and commissioning our features content.

This includes perspectives on student life, Sheffield-based takes on the latest trends, and guides on fun things to do in the city (which will also be an excuse for you to go and try some of them out for yourself!)

You will similarly work on interviews with students and notable alumni.

Ideal candidates will know what is relevant and relatable to students, come up with fresh article ideas, and plan ahead for time-bound content (e.g. Halloween, Christmas, exam seasons).

Other responsibilities include supporting writers, giving feedback, and collaborating with the rest of the editorial team (we have a weekly catch up meeting!)

There will also be opportunities to work on news and social media content, as well as our coverage of events.

You’ll be working on stories like these:
