Awhina reveals the sad reason she wouldn’t let Adrian meet her son during MAFS homestays
She wishes it had been different
This week it’s the MAFS Australia homestays and Adrian was surrounded by Awhina’s son’s belongings at her Perth home, but he didn’t actually meet the six-year-old.
When he pointed out a punchbag in her lounge, the bride revealed it belonged to her son because he “does MMA” – and she’s now revealed why she didn’t want Adrian to meet him.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Awhina explained that despite seeming like they were in a good place, they never actually sorted out their problems and their relationship was too uncertain to bring a child into.
The saddest part is that before she went into the experiment, Awhina hoped she would be in the position to introduce her husband to her son during the homestays, but it didn’t work out that way.
“I was quite fortunate that I got to go home a few times throughout the experiment and usually I’d be so excited, even if it was just for 24 hours,” she said.
“But this time was different. I imagined bringing my partner home, introducing him to my son, my family, my friends, but because of where we were at in the relationship that just wasn’t going to happen.”
“I think everyone can agree that Adrian and I have had a tumultuous journey so far. And even though we were in a good spot for us within the experiment, that was only because we’d pushed aside a lot of our issues.”

“We never resolved them, we just agreed to disagree and moved on,” she continued. “You don’t just introduce someone to your child when you don’t even know where the relationship is going. It wouldn’t have been a safe environment.”
Ultimately, Awhina just didn’t trust that Adrian or the relationship were serious enough to warrant introducing him to her son, and her sister Cleo was quick to call the whole thing “fake”.
“She has a point. Cleo’s not in the experiment, so she can see it from the outside,” Awhina told Daily Mail Australia.
“When you’re in the experiment, you’re living in a fake world – it’s not reality. You wake up every day and do random challenges, stay in an apartment all day and just watch movies with your partner. That’s not real life.”
“In reality, I have a son, a job, school drop-offs, after-school sports, friends, a schedule and Adrian has his own life in Sydney. We weren’t having those conversations about what life would look like outside the experiment.”
She admitted that “Cleo was right” and the relationship “wasn’t real yet”. Sadly, I don’t think it will ever be.
