Gillian Anderson told off ‘distracting’ theatregoers

The London student who filmed the viral video of Gillian Anderson telling off her fans outside a theatre has jumped to her defence.

Lily-Scarlett filmed Gillian Anderson scolding theatregoers by the stage door of London‘s Soho Palace after her performance of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In the clip, Gillian Anderson told fans: “You cannot sit in the front row.” Somebody could be heard saying, “You made us cry so much.”

Gillian Anderson continued: “I don’t care. You cannot sit in the front row. It’s so distracting. You can’t come 20 times and sit in the front row. It’ll drive me mad.”

The actor then posted on X on 4th October: “This video doing the rounds is me talking with women I go back over 20 years with – so please don’t say anything negative to or about them.

“We’re thrilled to be doing this show but for people in the front row, please be aware that in such an intimate venue we can all see you and sometimes, it can be a tad distracting! That’s all. All good.”

Lily-Scarlett, a student of the Fashion Retail Academy, detailed the context of the incident in a a 10 minute-long TikTok. She believed that Gillian was “being serious”.

Lily-Scarlett recognised some of the theatregoers as long-term members of the Gillian Anderson fandom. Lily-Scarlett described them as “45-year-old plus”, and “old enough to be [her] great-great-grandma”. She claimed the group “disrespected” her and her 17-year-old friend who was waiting by the stage door.

“They have attended almost every performance,” Lily-Scarlett commented, “very parasocial over her and nasty to other fans. So [Gillian Anderson] called them out, didn’t take a picture with them and asked to go back indoors.”

She also shared to her story: “[Gillian Anderson] didn’t do anything wrong. I am completely on her side. It’s the nasty, old, stalker woman who I have an issue with.”
