Students are urging each other to boycott Cardiff Uni Banter

Cardiff University students are urging each other to boycott the meme page Cardiff Uni Banter due to a “disgusting” confessions post it allegedly shared.

In screenshots seen by The Tab, Cardiff Uni Banter appeared to have posted a user-submitted joke about somebody having sex with a woman as she had a seizure. Instagram users argued this would constitute sexual assault. This post is not currently live on the Instagram page. Students claim Cardiff Uni Banter removed the post, but did not acknowledge the incident.

Cardiff students are urging each other to disengage with the meme account, and commenting “cardiffuniboycott” on posts currently on the page. Instagram users have commented that Cardiff Uni Banter’s alleged behaviour is “disgusting”, “f**king pathetic” and “spineless”.

Time To Act, a Cardiff University student group tackling sexual misconduct, demanded Cardiff Uni Banter address the alleged incident. Time To Act wrote on Instagram: “While you might have deleted the most recent post, this isn’t the only time you have shared posts depicting sexual violence. From rape admissions to cyberflashing, you continuously perpetuate rape culture in our student community. You decide what admissions are posted and yet you have never challenged any of these. Do better.”

The campaign group encouraged Cardiff University students to unfollow Cardiff Uni Banter, send their concerns to the page, not submit any “confessions”, and report any social media posts they encounter about sexual violence.

Cardiff Uni Banter has 15,000 Instagram followers, and posts dating back to January 2025. It describes itself as sharing “the best confessions, memes and banter in Cardiff”. Students are encouraged to submit “confessions” via an online form. Many posted “confessions” relate to sex and relationships, and some seem to allude to sexual misbehaviour. “Confessions” posts from the last few months mention “guys spanking people” in a club, and “heckling” students at graduation.

The Tab has contacted Cardiff Uni Banter for comment.
