Here are nine things Liverpool Uni students love to do the second the sun comes out

The grass steps are back, so it’s basically summer

It’s official – we’ve had more than three consecutive days of sun in Liverpool this week, so it’s basically summer, right?

Every student across the city finally has a new lease of life again. From pub garden afternoons to skipping lectures to head down to Formby Beach, it’s safe to say that we’re all thriving now we’ve experienced a bit of sunshine. We might be cooped up in sweaty seminar rooms and only have a tiny slab of concrete that we call our back gardens, but that’ll never stop us from making the most of the weather.

I’m not sure how many times this week you’ve been told that it’s hotter than the Costa Del Sol, but the plastic grass is back out on the Liverpool ONE steps and quite frankly, nothing can stop us from soaking up the sunshine. Even that dissertation deadline that seems to be getting closer and closer every second. Here are all the activities that students love to do the second they see the sun, and absolutely none of them are productive. Love that for us.

Touring round every pub garden in town

If you’ve not accidentally spent an entire afternoon sat out the front of The Brookhouse post-lecture yet, then what are you even doing? When the pints in plastic cups start flowing, and you’re recruiting all your housemates down just to have one, you know it’s about to be the perfect summer afternoon.

There’s no better feeling than ignoring every deadline and assignment you’ve got just to sit back and drink a warm pint outside Greenbank Fish Bar. The temptation to bring chips and curry sauce back to the table may be high, and it’s so worth it.

Skipping lectures because the weather is too nice

We actually can’t win. Every student refuses to go to their lectures when they wake up and it’s raining, and it’s exactly the same when the sun starts shining. Why waste an afternoon sitting in a sweaty lecture theatre when you could be sat in Sefton Park with some tinnies?

Dragging everyone you know down to Formby Beach

Part and parcel of being a student in Liverpool is making the most of the fact the beach is only a train ride away. With Crosby, Formby and even New Brighton right on your doorstep, it really would be rude not to drag your mates out for a beach trip every once in a while.

The water might be freezing cold, but walking down those sand dunes with a disposable barbeque in hand to catch the sunset is simply the best feeling ever. Bonus points if you’re reconnecting with nature after a particularly messy night out. Beach debriefs are the best debriefs.

Sitting out on Abercromby Square

If you do actually decide to attend your lectures during our mini heatwave then we salute you. No doubt we’ll catch you lazing around on Abercromby Square gazing longingly at Sydney Jones, knowing full well you’ve got deadlines coming up next week. With an iced latte from Union Brew in hand, you’re unstoppable.

Going for a stomp around Sefton Park every day

What’s the point of living in Smithdown if you don’t make the most of Sefton Park? That top field is flooded with students living in Greenbank kicking a football around with their endless amount of flatmates.

You’ll be sat in your living room begging for your housemates to go on a walk with you just to make the most of the sunny weather – even better if you coax them out of their rooms by promising you’ll get an ice cream from the cafe on the way in.

Giving a giant rounders or football game a go

Speaking of Sefton Park, someone in your group has definitely suggested ordering a rounders set or a football from Amazon so you can revert back to your primary school self and have a kick about on the grass. Bonus points if you bring a picnic and some tinnies for a properly wholesome afternoon.

Making the most of your concrete slab back garden

This one goes out to all the second years currently sat out in your makeshift back garden, which probably consists of some kind of rat infestation and some wobbly concrete slabs. It may not be something out of Grand Designs, but it’s yours and it’s beautiful.

The second we get a slither of sun every student sticks some fairy lights up and drags their desk chairs outside. That concrete slab garden becomes the ideal spot for a debrief and some undercooked burgers on a makeshift barbeque, because what else would you do in the sunshine?

Day drinking at Baltic Market

Student loan drops next week, which gives every student an excuse to spend a sunny day drinking at somewhere a little bit more fancy than Hope and Anchor. You’ll trek down to Baltic Market to share some small plates and an Aperol Spritz, stop by the Red Brick Market to buy some quirky trinkets and lap up the sunshine on a rickety pub garden bench in a giant warehouse. That’s student life for you.

Spending an afternoon down Lark Lane

If you’ve made it down to Sefton Park, you might as well pop down Lark Lane too, right?

Whether you’re braving the queue to grab a pastry from Lunko, or heading to Love and Rockets for a pint in the sunshine, it’s safe to say you’ll bump into almost everyone you know down there on a sunny afternoon.

There’s nothing more wholesome than making the most of the short sunny stints we get before we realise dissertation deadlines are actually real, and that the exam timetable isn’t some fun joke the universities are playing on us.
