Sheffield students’ hitchhike raises over £23,000 for charity
200 people made their way from Sheffield to Edinburgh, taking part in a ‘baby-bummit’
A group of University of Sheffield students have raised over £23k after hitchhiking to Edinburgh in November last year.
Bummit, the university’s charity hitch-hike society, had 200 students participate in the ‘baby-bummit’ to Scotland.
Speaking to The Sheffield Tab before last year’s journey to Glasgow, a spokesperson for Bummit said: “There’s a couple of favourite [charities] that work with us every year.
“Generally, we’ll do four Sheffield-based ones and then one based on where we’re going so we can help the community there and help the local area here as well.”
The funds raised have gone to multiple charities including local non-for-profits Sheffield Women’s Aid, Assist Sheffield and Simon Community Scotland – a Glasgow homelessness charity.
A portion of the sponsors also went to Roundabout Sheffield, a local youth housing charity.
Commented on the Bummit’s announcement post on Instagram, Roundabout said: “Amazing work guys, your fundraising will make such a huge difference to the young people we support.”
Bummit has raised over £13 million since its start in 2003 and is now the world’s largest student organised hitch-hiking group – but its not always an easy ride from A to B.
Again, speaking to The Sheffield Tab last year, a participant of Bummit said: “One year it took my team seven hours to get our first lift out of Sheffield, and it only took us to the nearest junction, it was terrible.
“It was the exact situation you don’t want to happen when your hitchhiking.”
The society organises baby-bummits where participants hitchhike within Britain, and ‘big bummits’ which take place from Sheffield to Europe – both events with some interesting stories to tell.
