Sheffield Safe Square night out aid scheme extended until spring 2025
The scheme helps people in need on nights out
The Sheffield “Safe Aquare” scheme has been extended for spring 2025.
The scheme has resources including a privately funded ambulance, heated tents, and on-hand medical treatment available for students or anyone in need on a night out.
It is set to run up until Saturday 29th March and offers services such as well being or medical support, phone charging, hot drinks and a chat, or even the opportunity to report any suspicious behaviour witnessed.
Kayleigh Waine, the project manager of Sheffield Safe Square said: “We’re so happy to be back helping, hopefully you don’t need us but if you do, we’re here.”
Located in Barker’s Pool in Sheffield city centre, the scheme was founded in 2023 and has returned each subsequent year over the festive period – but has now been extended for 2025.
Larissa Kirby, 20, a Sheffield University student, told ShefNews: “It’s comforting to know that there’s help out there, programmes like these are a step in the right direction to making nights out safer.”
The extension was made possible through the South Yorkshire Police and the Safer Sheffield Partnership contributing £20,000 and an extra £2,000 donated from the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, allowing their aid to continue.
Inspector Andy Rimmer, of the Sheffield city centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The facility provides an alternative place to direct people who may be feeling vulnerable while out in the city centre at night-time when further police intervention is not required.”
The team are there from 10pm to 4:30am to help each Friday and Saturday up until March 29.
