Squid Game creator finally reveals dark backstory of The Recruiter and what he’s really like

He explained how the Bread or Lottery game symbolises his true character

One of the most illusive characters in Squid Game is The Recruiter, who you might also know as The Salesman. He is responsible for getting people to sign up for the deadly games – a pretty dark job role.

In the first season of the show, he was seen playing ddakji with people at underground stations. He would pick people in financial trouble, and tease the games as a way to fix all of their problems. He would hand them a card, on which there are details of the games. In season two he took an even darker turn, playing “Bread or Lottery” with homeless people, and he destroyed food in front of them.

Despite people often wooing over The Recruiter because of his slick looks, he’s clearly a very dark character. He knows he’s luring people to their deaths. And now, the Squid Game creator has revealed more about The Recruiter, and how his backstory made him the person we see on the show.

So, who is the Squid Game recruiter and what is his story?

We never really learn much about The Recruiter in Squid Game. In season two we find out a bit more of his involvement in the games. He was formerly a masked guard. During his past, he had to kill his father after he lost during one of the games.

Then, he gained the trust of Oh-Il-nam, the old man. He was given the chance to have a role higher up, outside the games. Then, he was given the job of The Salesman, or The Recruiter.

In season two, he played a twisted game of Bread or Lottery with homeless people. The show’s creator has said this is a huge reflection of his dark past, and what he’s like as a person.

“I believe that Gong Yoo’s character [The Recruiter] is someone who lived a difficult, tough, rock-bottom life, just as much as those that are depicted as the homeless people in the series,” Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told RadioTimes.

“And he is someone who is so filled with self-hatred, it is expressed in the hatred he harbours for other humans. And by hating these people, he believes that he is different from them. [He is] showing and expressing his hatred for the people who choose lottery tickets instead of bread, almost as if he’s trying to escape his own self-loathing nature.”
