Make Our Rivers Safe: Sign the petition

Six young people have died in York’s rivers in the past two years. Something has to change

Since 2014, Ethan Peters, Chris Palmer, Stephen Fry, Megan Roberts, Tyler Pearson, Ben Clarkson have all died in the city’s rivers. Every single one, is one too many.

Following the most recent death of Ethan Peters, something has to change.

Everyone is stressing the consumption of alcohol as a cause, suggesting that excessive drinking always leads to falling in the river. It doesn’t.

Early last year, City of York Council made almost £100,000 worth of river safety improvements along the banks of the Ouse and Foss, however, The Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents (RoSPA) this summer suggested that more needs to be done.

We don’t know the full circumstances of Ethan’s death, but what we can agree on is that something has to change regarding river safety and it has to change soon.
