York breaks into top 20 best universities in the country

We’re above Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh

York is the 19th best university in the UK, according to the latest rankings published today by The Guardian.

Rising three places from 22nd place a year ago, we are ranked above Russell Group competitors Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh.

The top four ranked universities have all retained the places they held last year, with Cambridge pipping Oxford to first place, and St Andrews and Surrey taking third and fourth places respectively.

Lancaster, who beat us in this year’s Roses competition, have improved on their 10th place position last year coming eighth.

York scored particularly highly for the following subjects:

Biosciences – 5th

Chemistry – 4th

Criminology – 2nd

Film Production & Photography – 3rd

Forensic science & archaeology – 8th

History of Art – 7th

Politics – 10th

Social policy & administration – 7th

Robert Wareing, university league tables enthusiast, told The Tab: “I am very happy with York’s improvement this year. It’s proof that we can compete up there with the big guns.”
