Third year uses bubble wrap for cast after breaking foot

A car rolled over it on a stage production of Grease

An innovative third year drama student used bubble wrap as a cast after he broke his foot on a stage production last week.

Lewis Aaron Wood was working as a stage hand for Stage Society’s production of Grease when a real life car accidentally ran over his foot, fracturing the bridge in two places and breaking two toes.

He waited until the end of the musical to visit the hospital, but after consultation decided not to follow the doctor’s advice to get the injured foot set in plaster.

Instead, he hobbled home and wrapped the broken foot in bubble wrap.

Lewis, with his ingenious solution

Lewis told The Tab: “My foot was incredibly painful after the accident but I didn’t want a cast because it’s just awkward and it would get in the way. I enjoy doing stuff like showering normally without any hassle.

“The hospital were fine with it, casts are always optional anyway.”

Lewis, before he broke his foot

After his request to borrow an air boot on Facebook was unsuccessful, Lewis found another means to support his injured foot.

“I couldn’t find an air boot so decided to wrap it in bubble wrap.

“It started off as a joke but then I found it was actually way more comfortable – even if the back of my heel did get a bit wet, and I got a few weird looks walking around campus.

“I walked around with my sock and bubble wrap on, but kept the shoes off for comfort.”

Ouch

But the bubble wrap failed to provide Lewis with adequate protection.

His broken foot showed no signs of healing, and he has now decided to go back to the hospital for another check up.

“I used the bubble wrap for a few days, but my foot was still really sore so I went to the physio and got it properly strapped up – bubble wrap didn’t do the trick for that long.”

“It’s not really healing yet.

“It’s only been a few days and still in a lot of pain, so I’m going back to the hospital tomorrow.”

Lewis’s friends, however, hope the ordeal will carry on a little longer.

Lewis added: “My friends just laughed at me, but, to be honest, they know I’m a bit of a dick anyway.”
