Plans to demolish Towers dining hall and the Ann Packer building

Out with the old, in with the new

Uni bosses are currently seeking approval for the demolition of the Ann Packer Building and Towers Dining Hall.

Two of the university’s oldest relics, built in 1965 are facing the wrecking ball due to them being “unsuitable for modern needs”.

The latest proposals aim to create a new 252 cover dining room and kitchen area and a new 83 sq m common room are also being sought.

Particular members of the 310 strong student population feel the facilities provided are inadequate and many are hopeful the plans will bring new and improved facilities other than the four washing machines.

However, a major worry is what the dining provisions for the members of the hall would be during the demolition and subsequent rebuild.

Many fear, as with previous plans which were petitioned against, students may have to get lunch and dinner in West Park.

In recent years the university has continually invested in redeveloping East Park including the new design school and sports facilities.
