Big hits galore as rugby league lads win the league

‘Do you have to be northern to play it’

BUCS Loughborough Loughborough University rugby league

The Rugby League boys had a resounding 36-14 victory against Gloucestershire yesterday afternoon in this week’s Big Match.

The result means that they win BUCS Premier South.

The match was a winner takes all affair as the visitors were in first place and three points ahead of the best sports university in the country going into the game.

At the match there were a number of first time viewers of the sport who gave The Epinal their thoughts on it:

Imogen, a second year student asked, “do you have to be northern to play it?”

Todd Barrett, a third year History student reckons that “the hits seem bigger in league than union.”

Fresher, Jonah, preferred union over league, but added, “it’s still quite entertaining.” Matt, another third year didn’t rate it and said that it is a bit “repetitive.”

The game attracted a big crowd to the Towers pitch

Luff didn’t start the game well as they gave away a cheap penalty which would of given the visitors the first chance to score, but luckily they couldn’t take it.

The hosts did take their first chance and winger Tom Lewin made it 4-0.

Soon after Borough looked like scoring again but Ryan Proctor saw his try ruled out for a forward pass.

The home side were now well on top but missed another chance to add to the score after a poor final pass undid the good work by Toby Armstrong and Lewin.

Loughborough did finally get their deserved second score when Calum Bonallo took advantage of a dropped high-ball by Gloucestershire.

Liam Jackson saw his conversion hit the post to leave it at 8-0.

The away side replied through their full-back when he toed the ball through and regathered.

Hooker Robert Meadows stole a try close to the line, before Gloucestershire took the final chance before the break to make it 14-8 at half time.

The second half was dominated by the home side and their captain Alex Calvert as he set up and scored two tries. The All Golds did get a consolation before the end but it was too little too late as Loughborough walked on water once again to win 36-14 and claim the league.

It all kicked off on twitter between the two teams:
