Interested in joining us? How to become a new writer for The Bristol Tab
We’re hosting an open meeting on Tuesday 1st October at 6.15 in The Balloon Bar in The Richmond Building
Do you love being the first to hear about campus news? Are you unashamedly chronically online? Have you always fancied yourself a writer but don’t know where to start? Then The Bristol Tab is looking for people like you to come and write for us in the coming academic year!
So here is everything you need to know about joining us:
Who are we looking for?
We are welcoming any Bristol students to join us, from freshers to final years. Being part of The Bristol Tab is a great way to make friends for any freshers, and can provide a creative outlet besides your dissertation for third years. We want a diverse team who can provide different outlooks across the student community.
What can you write?
Writing for The Bristol Tab is split into two categories: features and news.
Writing news for The Bristol Tab means covering local news to keep students informed, providing a voice for all students. We carry out interviews, investigations, and attend the scenes of events, so writing news can be really exciting.
Recently, The Bristol Tab has covered stories such as a man killed after a wall surrounding Bristol Uni accommodation collapsed, the far-right riots in Bristol and the huge anti-racism protest in response, and the SU code of conduct updates with guidance on sexual misconduct after complaints.
We strive to provide the important news that students really care about, so if this is sounding like a bit of you, the news team will be perfect for you.
The other category of writing for The Bristol Tab is features writing. This can be guides for student life in Bristol, silly pieces that are just a bit of a laugh, and opinion pieces, that allow you to dig deep and write about things that really matter to you, and will matter to other students too.
Recent features include this definitive guide to Bristol accommodation halls for new students arriving this September, how to stay safe during Freshers’ Week, and what it would be like if Bristol Uni hosted the Olympics.
If you think you’re the funniest in your group, are a top yapper, and have strong opinions, then the features team would be lucky to have you.
How do you get involved?
We are holding an open meeting on Tuesday 1st October in the Balloon Bar in the Richmond Building, the Bristol SU, at 6:15pm. Anyone is welcome to this meeting, we will provide all the information about writing for The Tab and you can ask us any questions you might have.
We hold weekly meetings over a pint at the pub where we discuss what we are all currently working on, and where new ideas can be pitched and commissions can be picked up. No writing experience is necessary to come to a meeting, if you think you have an idea for an article, however niche it may be, we’d love to hear it.
Although you don’t have to commit to coming to every meeting, a great way to get more involved in The Bristol Tab is to attend them regularly, which will help you build up more of a relationship with the editing team.
We will provide more details on when and where our meetings will be held at the open meeting.
What’s in it for you?
Joining The Bristol Tab is a great experience I’d recommend to anyone. It is super cool to see your name above an article, and you will develop your writing skills in no time, with the help of our amazing editing team. It will look great on your CV, so if you’re having a post-grad panic, come and write for us!
