Netflix’s latest true crime tells the chilling story of a teenager who killed his own dad

I Just Killed My Dad will be released next week

The Girl in the Picture was a gripping, unspeakably horrific Netflix documentary which got a lot of people talking. Now, director Skye Borgman is back with another – and it looks just as complex and bingeworthy.

I Just Killed My Dad tells the story of Anthony Templet – a man who fatally shot his own father when he was 17-years-old. But, while contributors to the documentary have said he’s “a blank slate” without “empathy”, it seems like there could be more to the story than we originally thought.

Here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s latest true crime before it drops:

I Just Killed My Dad will examine the events which led up to the murder

Anthony Templet apparently murdered his dad, Burt, in cold blood, with people featured in the doc saying he “was definitely shooting to kill.” Despite this, it seems like Burt had some pretty big secrets of his own.

Templet told the police – and the documentary makers – that he acted in self-defence. According to Fox8Live, he told 911 operators: “He tried to attack me. Then, we got into a fist fight. Then, I ran in his room, closed the door, and got a gun. As I unlocked the door, he tried to (inaudible) and then I shot him.”

Family members claim Burt kidnapped Templet at the age of five, holding him hostage for over 10 years. He was allegedly abusive towards his family, and often used Templet’s kidnap to taunt them.

The question is: What’s the truth? Did Anthony really react in self-defence?
