Gentleminions TikTok trend: People are rocking up to the new Minions movie dressed in suits

My TikTok fyp has been inundated with hoards of teenagers going to see Minions: Rise of Gru, dressed in suits. The “gentleminions” trend is everywhere and it’s even thought to be behind a box office spike for the newly released Despicable Me spin-off.

But in a darker twist of fate, some cinemas are banning people from watching the film if they are thought to be partaking in the trend.

What exactly is the ‘gentleminions’ trend?

The trend is very simple. Big groups literally just turn up to a screening wearing suits, sometimes with bananas.

During the film, many participants will press their finger tips together in a triangular shape.

It’s basically all about an ironic appreciation of the film, with some people going as far as to term the so-called gentleminions “a cult”.

The official Minions TikTok account has even acknowledged the trend.

But some cinemas aren’t happy…

Some cinemas have started banning those participating in the “gentleminions” trend from coming to screenings of Rise of Gru.

One poster outside an Odeon in the UK reads: “Due to recent disturbances following the #Gentleminions trend, any group of guests in formal attire will be refused entry for showings of Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

While the nature of the disturbances remains unclear, videos of groups throwing bananas and moshing at screenings have since surfaced on TikTok.

A spokesperson for Odeon told Indy100: “Due to a small number of incidents in our cinemas over the weekend we have had to restrict access in some circumstances.”
