You need to watch the completely bizarre new Netflix horror show Brand New Cherry Flavor
The whole series dropped on Friday 13th and is full of revenge, witchcraft and… kittens
A new horror miniseries dropped on Netflix on Friday with little to no fanfare, and that show is Brand New Cherry Flavor. Weird name? Wait till you watch it and then you’ll know the true meaning of the word weird. I’d heard nothing about the show until I saw the poster, but loved the visual style of the poster and saw some critical acclaim after Googling, so dived in head first knowing as little as possible. And what a surreal ride it’s been!
This is everything you need to know about Brand New Cherry Flavor, and exactly why you need to watch it immediately if horror is your vibe.
Go in knowing as little as possible, but this is roughly the premise
Brand New Cherry Flavor is a miniseries adaptation of the 2011 novel of the same name by Todd Grimson. It’s set in the early 90s and is the story of aspiring filmmaker Lisa Nova, who is moving back to LA after some time creating a short horror film with hopes to get it produced. She meets with a big time film industry legend named Lou Burke, who leads her to believe he’ll produce it for her under her direction, but he stabs her in the back and plans to direct it and take the glory for himself.
Lisa then meets the mysterious and enigmatic Boro – a tattoo artist and apparent witch, who facilitates Lisa to curse Lou and make his life and career burn to the ground, but for a price. What follows is a CHAOTIC ride of rituals, violence, hallucinations, and unbridled REVENGE!
Who’s in the cast?
Rosa Salazar takes the lead role and stars as Lisa, who’s best known for her main role in Alita: Battle Angel, as the Nurse in American Horror Story: Murder House, her roles in Maze Runner and Divergent and for her role in Bird Box. Industry LEGEND Catherine Keener plays the mysterious Boro and is completely hypnotic. Keener is a Hollywood icon, but is best known for her roles in Being John Malkovich, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Into The Wild, Get Out and The Incredibles 2.
Other main cast members include Eric Lange (Victorious, Lost) and Jeff Ward (Channel Zero and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
Is it any good and is it SCARY!?
It’s got 79 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, which for horror is a bloody good time. Especially when the horror in question is as bizarre as Brand New Cherry Flavor. As a horror fan and a lover of the surreal, I’m absolutely romping through the series and I’m so glad all episodes are already available to stream because it’s definitely got an addictive nature to it. There’s at least one moment an episode where my jaw has quite literally been on the floor at what I’m witnessing unfold, and they plot each episode well so that when it happens you’re just desperate to binge watch.
I will say, it’s an extremely mysterious series, and if you don’t have the patience to stick with its chaos and just want a quick spook and jump scare then it’s perhaps not the show for you. It drip feeds its horror and keeps its cards close to its chest, but I personally find that extremely engaging. It’s gorgeously shot and edited, Los Angeles looks the perfect level of terrifying and beautiful. Neon light washes and an amazing 90s soundtrack. If you like your horror A24 style, you’ll love Brand New Cherry Flavor. It’s very The Neon Demon meets American Horror Story: Coven. Scary? Not really. Disturbing? Very. A character vomits up a baby kitten in episode one, so make of that what you will. But I can’t stop thinking about it, and it’s one of my favourite shows of the year so far.
