Are the TikTok pesto eggs really as good as they look? I tried them to find out

Now you can say you’ve had green eggs and ham

Another week, another new TikTok food trend. From whipped coffee to the tomato and feta cheese pasta, this one is probably by far the easiest to make since all you need is some pesto and eggs.

With over 10.3 million views, TikTok user @amywilichowski told her viewers to use pesto instead of oil to cook eggs. Although what she made was far fancier than anything I could ever make, after seeing everyone on my For You page hype it up, there was only one option left, and that was to give it a go. So, this is how it went.

What are eggs and pesto?

Well, it’s quite literally in the name. However, rather than using any type of cooking oil to cook your eggs in, you use the oil that comes from the pesto and this stops the eggs from sticking to the pan. It sounds pretty simple and that’s because it really is just this simple and easy to make.

The best part is you probably have everything you need in your kitchen already. I didn’t even have to leave my house so I call that a plus.

The prep

Being a student means you definitely have some form of pesto in your fridge to accompany the massive bags of pasta you have in the cupboard. I didn’t need to buy anything extra, and I could use up the pesto I had already opened the day before. This was ideal because nothing sucks more than having to throw away a full can of sauce just because by the time you go and use it, it’s managed to grow its own eco-system.

All I had to do was set everything on the counter and hope I wouldn’t drop an egg in the process.

I always buy a huge pack of eggs for absolutely no reason, thinking I will manage to eat 12 eggs in the two weeks they take to expire and then I go through phases where the thought of eating eggs makes me feel uncomfortable but, I was actually excited to try this out. Or maybe I’m just a big fan of pesto, which I can’t lie, I am.

The main event

Yes, my hob is crusty but it really do be like that sometimes

This is where things started to get serious, I spread the pesto on the pan on medium heat, turned around for a minute and the next thing I know the pan was spitting oil everywhere and trying to crack the eggs into the pan without getting hit by the oil was enough exercise for me for the week.

I was slightly upset that my yolk broke when I cracked the second egg but since at least one of them didn’t break, I would call that a success.

The taste test

I had high expectations, to begin with, because you really can’t go wrong with a classic jar of pesto. And honestly, once it started to cook it smelled really good.

I added a bit of pizazz to it by putting the pesto eggs on top of some bread, and although it wasn’t ciabatta bread, it was still pretty solid. I also put a bit of salt, pepper, and paprika on them for that extra razzle-dazzle.

Rating: Solid 8/10

The eggs were definitely a 10 out of 10, especially with the pesto – it really took away from the normal taste of eggs which was great. It would’ve been better if I had ciabatta bread and not a frozen loaf of bread but, it was so easy to make that it didn’t really matter. Also, all the TikToks I watched had it paired with avocado and other garnishes that definitely would’ve increased the rating if I had that stuff laying around.

Overall, I definitely recommend, it’s so quick and easy to make, it took less than 10 minutes. Use your leftover pesto and eggs and give it a go.
