Why Did You Kill Me? tells the story of a mother who investigated her daughter’s death using MySpace

Why Did You Kill Me? is about the death of 24-year-old Crystal Theobald, and the investigation undertaken by her mother. Crystal was shot by a gang whilst in a car in 2006, and her mother Belinda Lane was determined to get justice for her daughter. Crystal left behind two young daughters, and after her death police confirmed she had nothing to do with the gang that killed her. It was thought her death was a case of mistaken identity.

Over a 10 year period, Belinda worked tirelessly to find out who killed Crystal – and has said that even if it took her entire life, she would never have stopped. Belinda set up two fake profiles on MySpace in 2006, which she used to reach out to those she believed to be responsible for her daughter’s death.

Finally, in 2016, the suspect was arrested. At the time, Riverside Police Lt. Christian Dinco told The Washington Post: “She [Belinda] was very instrumental, working on social media to help us identify where he might be. She provided important information that helped lead us to the capture of William Sotelo. Without her help, he would likely still be outstanding right now.”

The Netflix synopsis reads: “The line between justice and revenge blurs when a devastated family uses social media to track down the people who killed 24-year-old Crystal Theobald.”

On January 23rd 2020, William Sotelo was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the murder of Crystal Theobald.
