Manchester synagogue attacker revealed to be Liverpool John Moores drop out

It’s claimed Jihad al-Shamie rarely attended lectures during his one year at university

The identity of the man who attacked Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue last week has been revealed as Jihad al-Shamie, a former Liverpool John Moores student.

al-Shamie enrolled to study media 2010 but dropped out after only one year.

Sources claim that whilst at university, he spent most of his time smoking marijuana and playing violent computer games, The Times reports.

Two Jewish worshippers, Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, died during last week’s attack in Manchester. One was mistakenly killed in police gunfire.

al-Shamie targeted the synagogue around 9.30am on Thursday, where people were rammed by a car and stabbed before armed police arrived at the scene. He was stopped by Jewish worshippers who barred the doors until the police arrived on the scene. Jihad al-Shamie was shot dead by the police, who responded quickly to the incident.

The attack occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar which focuses on atonement and repentance, involving a 25-hour fast for members of the Jewish community.

It was said that during his time at Liverpool, al-Shamie rarely attended lectures and would spend many hours a day playing on a console, often not bothering to get dressed.

He was then in-between jobs until he met his wife and had a child with her, becoming a full-time father.

al-Shamie also reportedly had a string of criminal convictions and was on bail after being arrested on suspicion of rape when he carried out the attack. The 35-year-old was also alleged to have had multiple affairs with other women whilst with his wife.

One woman claimed al-Shamie groomed her online, and criticised her for not being devout enough in her faith. He allegedly showed her videos of extreme violence without her consent, and shared his violent fantasies with her. She also claimed that al-Shamie stalked her, and tried to control where she went and what she ate. He continuously hid the fact that he had a wife and child from her.

The Manchester community has since come together in the aftermath of the terror attack, with a sea of tributes being left outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. Statements were also issued by the Prime Minister, as well as King Charles, following the incident.

Waqas Hussein, a neighbour of one of the victims, spoke about the community’s response. He said: “Moving forward, Manchester as a community will pull together. I think everybody has a shared responsibility to look out for one another… They are not going to divide us. We will come out of this stronger and more united.”

Waqas added: “I am a practising Muslim and, according to Quran, the murder of any innocent life is the loss of entire mankind.”
