Listen up Lancs freshers

| UPDATED

If you’ve just arrived in Lancaster and want to broaden your horizons beyond campus, here’s exactly how to get involved in the Lancashire community.

Lancaster’s community organisation, Love Lancaster, has put together some brilliant events that you won’t want to miss this Michaelmas Term.

These are wonderful ways to establish your new status as a Lancs resident, especially for those of you who are new to the north and want to explore more of our wonderful city’s charm.

Lancaster Live

Lancaster Live, commencing on the weekend of the 9th of October, features various live music performances, from solo artists to bands. These are held in Lancaster City Centre and spread over 50 venues, as well as a schedule of acts from local bands performing for free in Market Square, meaning everyone can enjoy the music.

The various surrounding venues in Lancaster are all accessible by bus. So, if you live on campus and are worried you won’t catch any of the acts you’re interested in, public transport is reliable and will get you there and back in one piece.

Breathing Colour Textile Show

Located in Williamson Park and running from the 16th to 19th October is The British Textile Biennial, where Margo Selby’s textile, Breathing Colour, will be hanging.

This textile piece of artwork was made in a residency at Standfast and Barracks, which is renowned for its outstanding textile printing legacy. The art piece uses a site-responsive textile sculpture to evoke movements of cloth throughout its factory, which then travels through waves and folds through the machinery.

So, if you’re into fashion or arts and crafts, you might like to check this out – the immersive colours are sure to lift your spirits.

Lancaster Literature Festival – LitFest

If you’re a bookworm or interested in the written word, Lancaster’s LitFest is back for the Autumn, from the 17th October until the 18th November. This event is volunteer-run and helps support local authors.

It is a collection of various shows and talks that you can attend by booking, with a small fee, either in person or virtually (mainly held at The Storey). You’ll gain insight into books, poetry, and all things literature.

LitFest also welcomes students from the English Literature and Creative Writing courses at Lancaster University to get involved, as some of the lecturers at Lancaster are featured patrons and contributors.

Light Up Lancaster

A dearly loved classic event returning on November 6th, 7th and 8th is Light Up Lancaster. This immersive and beautiful light display invites audiences to explore a mystical light-up trail throughout the city, where you can discover artworks made from light and glorious installations.

The lights displayed all around include concepts such as video mapping, creative projection, music, dance and illusions to make you wonder. Light Up Lancaster is free to attend and view; it will be visible from 5 pm until 10 pm on the days listed. Plus, while you’re out admiring the lighting, there will also be food stalls in the Market Square, so you can grab a bite to eat while looking at the beautiful illuminations.

While I’ve picked these out as Love Lancaster’s best events, if you head over to its website you can find a whole range of other events happening this term that might be up your street.
