Charlie Kirk’s funeral had $10M ‘Super Bowl’ security and these 11 very strict rules
A lot of people were turned away, even after waiting for hours
Charlie Kirk’s funeral was held in Glendale, Arizona, yesterday, September 21, where thousands of attendees had to follow a long list of strict rules.
Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck while speaking at a student debate event at Utah Valley University on September 10. He died shortly after in the hospital. A suspect, Tyler Robinson, is in custody and has been charged with seven offences.
His funeral was held yesterday. It was open to the public, though attendees had to register online with their details.
Authorities implemented Super Bowl-level security costing over $10 million to keep attendees safe. Officer M. Mendez of the Glendale Police Department spoke to The Sun about the security measures in place. “We’re prepared. We’re confident that we will be able to take care of any matters that arise and keep the public safe, all the attendees, and anyone who is in the area,” he said.
The high-security measures were necessary because the service was attended by numerous high-profile figures, including former President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Speaker Mike Johnson.
Additional precautions included drones for aerial monitoring, a real-time crime centre, sniper teams, and biochemical units on standby. An overflow area at Desert Diamond Arena was also set up for those unable to enter the stadium due to capacity limits.
CNN security correspondent Josh Campbell reported, “People have been turned away, who were waiting here for hours and hours in line. But they do have other areas that they can go: The overflow area.”
Officer Mendez added, “We’ve been working non-stop with all our partnering agencies. We take pride in keeping our community safe,” noting that the planning was particularly challenging given the scale of the event and the number of dignitaries in attendance.
