Erika Kirk opens up about Charlie’s final moments and her one regret before his death

‘He was just so excited’

Erika Kirk has shared intimate details about her husband, Charlie Kirk’s, final moments, revealing both the joy he felt before leaving for an event and her lingering regret over his safety.

The 31-year-old conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA was tragically shot while attending an event at Utah Valley University and later died in the hospital. A suspect, Tyler Robinson, is in custody and has been charged with seven offences. According to the BBC, the charges include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.

Erika Kirk has previously shared videos about Charlie and the life they built together. Now, she has opened up about their final moments, describing the night before he was killed.

In an interview with The New York Times, Erika said that Charlie could barely sleep before his event in Utah. “His adrenal glands were just going off,” she recalled. “He got up, and I could hear him eating something in the kitchen. He’d been waiting all summer to begin touring.” She added that visits to college campuses “were like an Olympic event for him.”

“He trained for them,” she said. “He had whiteboard sessions for hours. Mock debates. He was just so excited.”

Early the next morning, Charlie slipped out of the house for his chartered flight to Utah. Erika texted him, “I love you,” before he left. A staff member later told her that Charlie had told the pilot, “Today’s going to be a great day.”

Erika was in her mother’s hospital room when she received the call confirming Charlie had been shot. By the time she arrived, he had already passed away.

She revealed that she had repeatedly urged Charlie to wear a bulletproof vest, especially after he received multiple threats. A friend even suggested he speak behind bulletproof glass. But Charlie refused, saying, “Not yet,” and trusting his team and the security arrangements. Erika wondered if, deep down, he had already accepted that something like this could happen.

Charlie Kirk is survived by Erika and their two children. Turning Point USA announced that Erika will become the new chair and CEO, continuing the organisation that Charlie founded in 2012.
