Police issue statement after man is found dead in ‘pool of blood’ at Burning Man festival

It’s being investigated as a homicide

A man was found dead in a “pool of blood” at Burning Man festival on Saturday (30th August) and it’s currently being investigated as a homicide.

His body was found at 9.14pm local time while the famous “Man” figure was beginning to burn in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, the Pershing County Sherriff’s Office revealed in a statement shared on Facebook.

During Burning Man, a temporary city called Black Rock City is built in the desert. The week long art and community event is all based around a 40-foot wooden sculpture called “the Man” which is burnt at the end of the event.

“A Pershing County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was flagged down by an event participant who advised of a male subject lying in a pool of blood,” they said. “Rangers immediately responded to the campsite and found a single white adult male lying on the ground, obviously deceased.

“The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Forensic Science Division was called into assist in processing the scene and collection of evidence. On site enforcement interviewed several participants in the immediate area. This process is still ongoing and the portion of the ‘City’ where this occurred will have heavy law enforcement presence until the scene can be released.”

The identity of the man is still unknown, but he has been transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiners Office where an autopsy will be completed. Police said this “appears to be a singular crime” but people should “always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances”.

“There is no further information available at this time, but it will be released as appropriate to provide for communication whilst still preserving the integrity of the complicated investigation of a crime in a city which will be gone by the middle of the week,” the statement concluded.

In a statement on their official website, Burning Man said they are “cooperating with law enforcement” and “the safety and well-being of our community are paramount”. They also urged people not to interfere with investigations currently going on at the festival. Burning Man started on Sunday 24th August and ends on Monday 1st September.
