Wait, why exactly is Tyla being sued? Here’s a full rundown of the Water lawsuit

She just can’t catch a break

In 2023, global pop sensation Tyla topped charts everywhere with her Grammy-winning hit, Water. But now, the same song that made her viral is getting her into some serious legal trouble.

Tyla is being sued by two songwriters and producers who allegedly worked on Water and claim they were not properly credited.

Billboard revealed that Jackson LoMastro and Olmo Zucca, who are credited as co-writers, claim they weren’t credited for their work as producers on the song. This means they missed out on royalties. Water has over one billion streams on Spotify and over a million videos on TikTok.

The sole producer credit is to Sammy SoSo (Samuel Awuku), who has worked with Burna Boy and Wizkid. Jackson LoMastro and Olmo Zucca allegedly tried to come to a civil agreement outside of court, but Sammy SoSo refused.

They claim Sammy SoSo made an agreement with Tyla for sole producer credits, and he tried to lowball them by offering 10% each of publishing royalties, while he got 15%. The pair originally sued Tyla and her team back in March, but dropped their case in late July and are now filing another case, with a new attorney.

The California-based producers are suing both Tyla and her record label’s owner, Sony Music Entertainment. Their main claim is for full credits and royalties, including past royalties.

“Although plaintiffs tried for months to resolve the matter with [SoSo], [SoSo] refused to cooperate and, instead, engaged in a pattern of deception designed to conceal his nefarious actions,” says their lawsuit.

Legal trouble is just the latest in a bunch of controversies involving Tyla. Her recent rollout for her upcoming album has brought conversations about her racial identity back up. Tyla has previously identified as “coloured,” a term used for South Africans with mixed backgrounds, as well as black. This caused a split online as many are not familiar with the term in a South African context.

Cardi B stood up for Tyla among the backlash in a recent X space.

“People been dragging the sh*t out of Tyla, and it’s like, the girl doesn’t even address or talk about nothing,” she said in a rant about celebrity culture.

“[What] I do know is every single time I scroll down on my TikTok, there’s a video of her and people are talking sh*t and it’s like, Goddamn, what do you want her to f*cking do, cut her f*cking veins? Like, enough. Enough.”

Tyla has also been getting flop allegations because her recent singles have not performed as well, and people on TikTok are saying she’s already fallen off. However, multiple people have pointed out that this isn’t true – she’s just not charting in the US and UK.

There’s no release date for Tyla’s sophomore album yet, but she’s indicated it’ll be out sometime this year.
