Watchdog investigating GP after he allegedly ‘harassed’ University of Glasgow rape survivor
Dr Andrew McFarlane’s son was convicted in 2022 for raping Ellie Wilson

A watchdog is investigating a GP after he allegedly “harassed” a University of Glasgow rape survivor.
Dr Andrew McFarlane is being investigated by the General Medical Council (GMC) for the supposed harassment of a woman his son raped.
Ellie Wilson was raped by Daniel McFarlane on two occasions between December 2017 and February 2018 whilst they were students at the University of Glasgow. He was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to five years in prison.
Over the past two months, Daniel’s father has taken to social media to claim that Daniel faced a miscarriage of justice, as well as making dozens of “disturbing” comments about Ellie.
According to The Times, Dr McFarlane wrote a number of unsubstantiated comments on X.
Since the publication of the posts, it is believed that the GMC is looking into the matter, however, the organisation does not routinely comment on individual doctors.
Ellie Wilson, who waived her right to anonymity, said she would be happy to cooperate with the council, if needed.
She explained that she hopes Dr McFarlane “will be held to account for the harm he has caused”, adding: “As if being raped and abused was not enough I’ve had to face a campaign of harassment, abuse and defamation.”
“This has had a significant toll on my mental health and, at points, left me feeling suicidal. His behaviour towards me has left me feeling like I’ve been abused all over again, compounding the trauma,” The Glasgow University graduate said.
“It is extremely disturbing that the man responsible for this is a GP; someone entrusted to look after people at their most vulnerable.”

Dr McFarlane was contacted by The Sunday Times, telling journalists that his behaviour was motivated by the belief that his son did not assault Ellie.
“As a doctor I am responsible for the care and proper management of patients I am responsible for,” he said. “No patient I am responsible for has been harmed by my X account.”
Dr McFarlane also claimed that he was standing up to “oppression and abuse”, adding: “As a Christian I am poor and retched [sic] and seek forgiveness for my sins from the God of all grace, but I have a duty and responsibility to stand up to the oppression and abuse of the weak and vulnerable.”
