K-pop influencer’s sister speaks out after she dies by suicide on TikTok live after bullying

Following intense bullying and a public apology, K-pop fan Mina Chan reportedly took her own life whilst on a TikTok livestream.

Mina amassed a massive following on TikTok of 300,000 followers, largely posting about the K-pop band ENHYPEN and its members EVAN, Ni-ki, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, Jay, and Jake. Specifically, she was really into Sunoo and Ni-ki.

In July, Mina attended an ENHYPEN concert in the United States, where she gifted Sunoo and Ni-ki bouquets of flowers. Though wholesome, it marked the start of a really sad story.

Following the concert, Ni-ki discussed concert etiquette on a livestream that many people took as a reference to Mina and her flowers. He did not mention her, nor did he talk about the flowers.

“Everywhere we go there are a few people who really want us to notice them,” he said.

It sparked a massive amount of backlash for Mina, with many supposed fans slamming her as “selfish” and a “fake fan”.

Announcing that she was deleting her account as a result, Mina apologised: “I feel like my actions ended up taking advantage of Sunoo’s kindness. I’m truly sorry. I feel so apologetic toward Sunoo and all the Sunoo fans.

“By attending ENHYPEN’s fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was. I deeply regret the rude behaviour I exhibited in America. I ruined the atmosphere of the venue by prioritising my own desire to meet Ni-ki over the precious time Ni-ki, who loves America so much, deserved. I’m truly sorry. To everyone who has supported me as sweeter_nk until now, thank you so much.”

Sadly, on August 5, South Korean police recieved emergency calls about Mina attempting to take her own life on a TikTok stream. Her passing was confirmed soon after, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

Mina’s younger sister also confirmed the sullen news, writing: “My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police at Seoul’s Yongsan station are still investigating Mina’s death.
