QS World University Rankings 2026: University of Sheffield surges back into top 100

It has risen thirteen places from last year

The University of Sheffield has surged back into the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings – after narrowly missing out for the first time ever last year.

In this year’s table of 1,501 international higher education institutions, the University of Sheffield placed 92nd overall and 15th in the UK.

In 2024, it was ranked 105th globally.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Koen Lamberts said: “We are delighted to be recognised as one of the world’s top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings.

“This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire community and reflects our commitment to research excellence, innovative teaching, and providing a truly global experience for our staff and students.”

The QS World University Rankings are regarded as the most comprehensive international rankings – taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation and outcomes, academics to student ratio, numbers of international staff and students, international research partnerships and sustainability from 1.5 million academic nominations and 520,000 employer nominations.

Last week, the university was ranked 16th in the Complete University Guide 2026 – beating the University of Leeds and University of Manchester.

In 2025 tables, it achieved 98th in the The Times Higher Education global rankings, runner-up for university of the year in the The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025, and top Russell Group in the annual National Student Survey.
